I was scrolling through her phone looking for concert tickets we’d bought, and that’s when I saw the notification. I didn’t care about the message itself, but the app it came from made me curious. So I started snooping, just a little. I never expected to find the truth that would destroy everything.

I ended up in her conversation with Stuart, a guy who used to be a family friend until he moved away. We got along well, so I was surprised she’d been talking to him at all. Then I saw the pictures. She’d sent him dozens of photos of our one-year-old son.

That was strange, but not alarming. What made my heart stop was a message from him: “Can I see some pictures of our second son? ”

Our second son. Not yours.

Ours. I assumed it was a typo at first. I wanted it to be a typo. But when I scrolled up and read the entire history, I couldn’t deny it anymore.

My wife had been having an affair with Stuart for years, long before our first child was born. Our kids weren’t mine. They were his. I felt like I was losing my mind.

I wanted to laugh, but not because anything was funny. It was that hysterical kind of reaction you get when your brain can’t process the pain. I had to calm down because I heard her coming back into the room. She saw me with her phone and asked what I was doing.

I showed her the email with the tickets and forwarded them to myself. She bought it. The full story was worse than I could have imagined. They’d been sleeping together before we had our first son, and her pregnancy was an accident.

But she wasn’t sorry. In the texts, she gloated that it served me right because I never wanted children anyway. She’d taken my old hesitation about fatherhood and turned it into a weapon, using it to justify betraying me. I had told her early in our relationship that I didn’t want kids because I grew up in a rough area and had seen too many children suffer because their parents weren’t ready.

She’d fought me on it for years, and eventually, I changed my mind. I looked at her one day and realized I’d do anything to make her happy. I started saving money for the kids before we even got married because I didn’t want finances to ever hurt them. When I told her I was ready to be a father, I expected joy.

Instead, she seemed distant. I thought it was exhaustion from all our arguments. Now I know it was something else entirely. I loved our sons.

I embraced fatherhood fully. I held them, fed them, played with them. I’d told her once that I was foolish for not understanding what I was missing out on. But according to her texts, she still saw me as some reluctant father who didn’t deserve the children she gave me.

She enjoyed punishing me by having kids with another man. There were messages from when they decided to end the affair, but the texts started up again. She told him they had to be more careful this time. He asked her if she was sure she didn’t want to take Plan B, and she said she was sure.

She wanted to get pregnant again. During the pregnancy, she texted him that she felt like a bad person, but a part of her loved that the babies were his. I couldn’t look at my wife the same way. I couldn’t look at my kids the same way.

As much as I loved them, the happiness I used to feel when I looked at them was gone, replaced by confusion and doubt. I tried to act normal, but I know my mood showed through. I didn’t want the kids to be victims. They didn’t do anything wrong.

But I couldn’t help asking myself over and over if they were even mine. I knew I had to get them tested. There was no other way to handle it. I told myself she might be wrong.

She might assume Stuart was the father when he wasn’t. Our marriage was dead either way, but if those kids were mine, it would make the pain so much easier to bear. I took them out for a day of fun, telling my wife I wanted to give her a day off. We went to the zoo, and halfway through, I took them to a lab I’d found online.

We all had our cheeks swabbed. They said it would take a few days to get the results, and I had them sent to my email because I couldn’t trust her not to intercept the mail. The waiting period was torture. I tried to live like we were a normal family, but it was all an act.

I knew my life was about to change forever, and I was right. The results came back, and both children were confirmed not to be mine. I read the email outside the house because I knew I’d spiral, and I did. Evil thoughts crossed my mind.

I had built a life with this woman, raised these kids, loved them with everything in me, and she had betrayed me in the worst way a person can betray another. Being cheated on is bad enough, but to raise children that aren’t yours, completely oblivious to the truth? How was I supposed to keep going when every time I looked at them, I saw the pain? I got angry.

Really angry. And I did something irrational that could have ruined my life, but even now, I don’t regret it. In the messages, Stuart had sent his address so Monica could bring the kids to visit. So I decided to pay him a surprise visit.

It was getting late, but still bright out. I knocked on his door, and I didn’t even hide from the peephole. I wanted him to know it was me. He opened the door, and I have to admit, he knew what was coming.

He just said, “Hey. ” I nodded. He let me in, hoping we could talk. Instead, I threw a punch.

A full-force hook that connected clean and knocked him to the floor. I got on top of him and kept swinging. I was so consumed by rage that I didn’t even notice he was protecting his face. I just kept hitting him like an animal.

I couldn’t do this to Monica, but I could do it to him. He was just as guilty as she was. When I finally stopped, gasping for air, his face was a mess. Split lip, swollen, bloody.

And seeing that gave me what I needed. I felt like I’d gotten what I came for. I asked if he wanted me to call 911, both for him and to turn myself in. He didn’t say anything.

I told him they could have their life together. To me, it was payment. I spent four years of my life because of him. He could have her, but he had to pay for the pain.

I spent the next few days looking over my shoulder, expecting the police to show up. They never did. I guess he accepted the beating, knowing you can’t sleep with someone’s wife and expect to be protected from the consequences. He told Monica about the visit, but he didn’t tell her that I knew the truth.

So I could see her unease. She knew something was wrong, but she couldn’t admit to anything. Meanwhile, I was preparing for the divorce. When she was served with the papers, she just looked at them blankly.

She couldn’t say anything because what was there for her to say? She knew she was at fault. She looked at me sadly, nodded, and signed the papers right away. She still lived with me for a while.

I didn’t push her out because I didn’t want to lose the kids yet. I loved them as my own, but their real father was out there, and they were still young. It was better to let them go. As much as I loved them, I couldn’t co-parent with another man for the rest of my life.

I’d rather take the pain of four years than endure that. When the court-ordered paternity testing came back with the same conclusion, the split went the way it would have gone if they were mine. The only difference is we weren’t fighting for custody. She got the house, and the money we’d saved was split in two.

I walked away with quite a bit, but I didn’t care about the money. I just wanted to walk away and not have to think about her for as long as possible. Leaving the kids was traumatic. I gave them one last beautiful day before I said goodbye, hoping I’d never have to see them again.

You can say what you want about that decision, but I don’t regret it. It was a hard choice, but it was the right one. I didn’t even plan revenge. Her pain came by itself.

She came to me for advice, saying things were tough as a single mother. She said she had money, but it was running out. I asked about Stuart. They had loved sneaking around.

Now that they had free rein, didn’t they want to be together again? She was quiet. Then she admitted they’d tried living together, but Stuart liked being a father from afar. He said he needed time to get his mind right for full-time fatherhood.

I laughed. Of course he did. He liked the affair with no strings attached. Now that she was actually available, he didn’t want her anymore.

I asked how she was so worried about money when she’d walked out with plenty, and she could always sell the house. She told me Stuart had been a spendthrift when they were together, buying himself nice things, spending and spending until his interest faded. I told her I couldn’t help her. She had family.

She tried to guilt-trip me using the kids, and that hurt, but I told her they weren’t my problem anymore, thanks to her. She asked if I could spend one night with them, just as a sleepover, to make the kids happy. I shook my head. She started pleading, telling me she was lonely and didn’t expect anything to happen.

I laughed and told her to leave my apartment. She looked shocked, so I said it again. She left, and I haven’t heard from her since. I hate that I’m now wifeless and childless.

I had no say in how things turned out. I did my best, and it ended this way. I’m done with her.

I’ll focus on moving forward, and hopefully, I can do that without issue.
