The room tilted violently, and I knew with terrible certainty that my stepfather had drugged me. I had begged, pleaded, and finally thrown a tantrum worthy of a child just to be allowed into this ballroom, the first I’d been permitted to attend in ten years. Now I could barely keep my feet under me, the chandeliers blurring into streaks of golden light as my limbs turned to honey. “What’s wrong with me?

” I whispered, but my voice sounded distant, as if it belonged to someone else. King Consort Oberon’s grip tightened on my arm as he guided me across the dance floor. His smile was cold and calculating, the smile of a snake watching a mouse stumble into its coils. “You said you wanted to come to the ball, darling,” he said, his voice dripping with false concern.
“You were very firm about it, in fact. ”
My eyelids drooped. I fought to keep them open, fought to keep my spine straight. “I feel… dizzy.
”
“Perhaps you should return to your room, my love. ”
His fingers trailed up my arm, possessive and sickening. He wound a strand of my blonde hair around his finger like a chain. “Don’t call me that,” I managed, though the words came out slurred.
My head lolled forward, and I jerked it back with tremendous effort. I would rather collapse on the marble floor than seek comfort from this monster. “You know how I feel about you, princess,” Oberon murmured, low enough that the dancing couples around us couldn’t hear. “How I’ve always felt.
”
“I know how you feel about the throne,” I said, each word a struggle. “And it will never be yours. ”
His grip turned bruising. “It will be when you become my wife.
You are already mine, Brina. I intend to keep you. ”
“You—you were my mother’s husband! ” The protest came out weak, pathetic.
I hated how powerless I sounded. “And you are your mother’s daughter,” he said, his breath hot against my ear. “Just as beautiful. Just as valuable.
”
“You killed her! ” The accusation hung between us, dangerous and true. He smiled wider. “You can’t prove that, darling.
No one can. ”
A nobleman approached, bowing low. “Your Majesty, if I might have a word about the trade agreements…”
“Of course, Lord Pemberton. ” Oberon’s tone shifted to one of gracious authority as he released my arm to clasp the lord’s hand.
I swayed, nearly stumbling, but managed to take a step back. Then another. I slipped into the press of dancing couples before Oberon could notice. Tonight’s mating ceremony, the union between the Alpha King’s younger sister and Duke Ashford, had drawn nobles from across my human kingdom and dignitaries from the neighboring shifter realm.
The ballroom glittered with both my people and the wolf shifters, those magical beings who could transform between man and beast. Allies, I thought desperately. Someone here must be willing to help me. One of the visiting shifters, perhaps?
Or a noble who remembers my mother? Someone must see that Oberon is a monster. The room tilted violently. I grabbed at a passing server’s tray for balance but missed, my fingers closing on air.
Where was I? What was I doing? The thoughts scattered like startled birds, impossible to catch. Faces blurred past, laughing, drinking, dancing.
Human nobles in their silk and jewels. Shifter warriors with their unnaturally bright eyes and predatory grace. None of them cared that a human princess was being held prisoner in her own palace. None of them cared that a dark mage had bewitched my mother, married her for the throne, and then slowly poisoned her over the course of two years.
None of them would care when Oberon announced our engagement later, when I’d be too drugged to refuse. I stumbled backward, trying to catch myself, but my feet wouldn’t cooperate. I crashed into something solid. A chair, I thought dimly.
And then I was falling, tumbling gracelessly into someone’s lap. “Easy there,” said a voice. Strong hands steadied me, keeping me from sliding right off onto the floor. “Are you alright?
”
I blinked slowly, trying to make sense of where I was. I’d somehow ended up curled sideways in a chair, my head resting against a very broad, very warm chest. I tilted my face up, and my heart stopped. The Alpha King of the shifter realm was staring down at me.
His eyes were the color of storm clouds, sharp and predatory, framed by dark hair that fell across his brow. He was dressed in black and silver, the insignia of his house stitched across his collar. The entire ballroom seemed to hold its breath, watching us. I knew his face from the official portraits that hung in our palace’s gallery, the ones that had been there since before my mother’s death.
Kaelen Voss, the Alpha King. Ruler of the wolf shifters across the border, feared and respected in equal measure. He rarely left his own territory, and his arrival tonight for his sister’s mating ceremony had been the talk of the court for weeks. And now I was sprawled across his lap like a discarded doll.
“I’m so sorry,” I mumbled, trying to push myself upright. My arms refused to cooperate. I sagged back against him, my head spinning. “Don’t apologize,” he said.
His voice was low and even, with no trace of the cold amusement I might have expected from a king who’d just had a strange woman collapse on him. “You look unwell. Where is your escort? ”
A wave of nausea rolled through me.
“I don’t—I need—please, I can’t go back to him. ”
His eyes narrowed. “Who? ”
“Oberon.
” The name came out like poison. “My stepfather. He’s going to—he’s going to announce our engagement tonight. I can’t—I won’t—please, you have to believe me, I’m not lying.
”
The Alpha King’s jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. He glanced across the ballroom, and I followed his gaze. Oberon was still speaking with Lord Pemberton, but his eyes were scanning the crowd, searching for me. “That man,” the Alpha King said slowly, “is your stepfather?
”
“He married my mother. He killed her. ” The words tumbled out before I could stop them. I was too weak to be careful, too desperate to hold back the truth.
“I know it sounds insane. I know you have no reason to trust me. But he poisoned her over two years, and now he wants to do the same to me. He drugged me tonight so I couldn’t refuse his proposal.
”
The Alpha King’s expression remained unreadable. For a long moment, he said nothing. The music swelled around us, the dancers continued their graceful turns, and I waited, my heart pounding against my ribs. “Your name,” he said at last.
“Brina. Princess Brina of the human kingdom. ”
“I know who you are. ” He studied me with those storm-colored eyes.
“I’ve heard rumors about your mother’s illness. They said she wasted away, that no healer could find a cause. ”
“Because it wasn’t an illness,” I said fiercely. “It was him.
She was healthy until he came. She started losing weight, sleeping all the time, and then she couldn’t get out of bed. And he was always there, always feeding her those little draughts he made in his private chambers. I was only fourteen.
I didn’t understand until it was too late. ”
The Alpha King’s hand moved, and for a moment I thought he was going to push me off his lap. Instead, he pressed two fingers against my wrist, checking my pulse. “Your pupils are dilated,” he said.
“Your skin is cold and clammy. You’re shaking. ”
“I know. He put something in my wine.
I saw him do it, but I couldn’t refuse to drink it. He would have known something was wrong if I’d refused. ”
“Clever girl, to notice. ”
“It was the only thing I had left,” I whispered.
“My father died when I was a child. My mother remarried a year later. I never trusted Oberon, but I couldn’t prove anything. And now I can’t even prove this.
”
The Alpha King’s gaze flickered past me, and I turned my head just enough to see Oberon excusing himself from Lord Pemberton. He was moving toward us now, his expression carefully pleasant, but there was a hard edge to his eyes. “He’s coming,” I breathed. “I can see that.
”
“Please. ” My voice cracked. “You’re the only one who can help me. If you send me back to him, I’ll be trapped forever.
He’ll marry me, he’ll take the throne, and he’ll kill me like he killed my mother. Please. ”
The Alpha King’s hand tightened on my arm. Not bruising, not possessive, but steady.
Anchoring. “When my sister’s ceremony ends,” he said, “I will speak with you privately. Until then, stay close to me. ”
“Like you’d steal one of my human treasures.
”
Ice crackled down my spine. I heard footsteps approaching, then Oberon’s smooth voice, pitched to carry over the music. “Your Majesty. ” Oberon bowed, shallow and perfunctory.
“I am honored you would spend time with my stepdaughter. Brina, darling, you must not impose on the Alpha King’s hospitality. Come with me. ”
I didn’t move.
I couldn’t. The Alpha King’s arm came around my shoulders, drawing me against his side. “She isn’t imposing,” he said. “I asked her to keep me company.
”
Oberon’s smile flickered. “How generous of you. But Brina is unwell. I should take her to her chambers so she can rest.
”
“I’ve already sent for my personal physician,” the Alpha King said. “He’ll examine her here, in front of witnesses. That way there can be no question about her condition. ”
Oberon’s eyes hardened.
For a moment, I thought he might argue. But there were too many eyes on us now, too many nobles pretending not to watch, too many shifter dignitaries who might take offense at a human king consort challenging their Alpha King. “Very well,” Oberon said through his teeth. “I will wait for the physician’s report.
”
He stepped back, but he didn’t leave. He lingered at the edge of the dance floor, watching us with the patience of a cat at a mouse hole. I wanted to scream. I wanted to run.
I wanted to claw his eyes out. Instead, I sat very still against the Alpha King’s chest, breathing in the scent of cedar and smoke and something wild, something that made my pulse quicken in a way that had nothing to do with fear. “He’s not going to give up,” I said quietly. “I didn’t expect him to,” the Alpha King replied.
“But he won’t act rashly. Not here, not in front of my pack. ”
“Your pack? ”
“My sister’s ceremony, my presence, my authority.
” He looked down at me, and there was something almost amused in his eyes. “You said it yourself. Tonight’s gathering is full of shifters who owe their loyalty to me. Oberon would be a fool to challenge me openly.
”
“He’s not a fool,” I said. “That’s what makes him dangerous. ”
The Alpha King was quiet for a long moment. The music shifted, the dancers parted around us, and I felt the weight of his gaze like a physical touch.
“Tell me everything,” he said. “From the beginning. Don’t leave anything out. ”
And so I did.
I told him about my mother’s wedding, three months after my father’s funeral. About Oberon’s charm, his silver tongue, the way he’d courted her with flowers and poetry while my father’s body was still cold in the crypt. About the way he’d slowly isolated us from the court, dismissing old retainers and replacing them with his own people. I told him about the years of imprisonment, the gilded cage of my own chambers.
I told him about the guards who followed me everywhere, the servants who reported my every word, the tutors who taught me only what Oberon approved of. I told him about the whispers I’d overheard, the maids who gossiped when they thought I was asleep. About the draughts Oberon gave my mother every night, sweetened with honey to hide the bitterness. About the way she’d looked at me near the end, her eyes sunken and clouded, her voice barely a whisper: “Be careful, Brina.
He wants more than the crown. ”
I told him about the night she died. The rain hammering against the windows, the physician shaking his head, Oberon weeping by her bedside like a devoted husband. And then, when he thought no one was watching, I saw him smile.
“I was seven when I realized he’d killed her,” I said, my voice flat. “I was too young to understand. But I saw that smile, and I knew. I knew.
”
The Alpha King’s hand moved to my back, a slow, steady pressure. “That’s a heavy burden for a child to carry. ”
“I carried it for ten years. And now he wants to take the throne by marrying me.
He’s been planning it since my mother died. He just needed me to come of age. ”
“You’re of age now? ”
“I turned eighteen last month.
He wanted to announce our betrothal at tonight’s celebration. He called it a ‘gesture of unity’ between our kingdoms. ”
“A dark mage claiming a human throne through marriage to his stepdaughter,” the Alpha King said slowly. “Even by my people’s standards, that’s an abomination.
”
“He’s not just a mage. He’s been studying dark magic for decades. He has contacts, allies, informants across both kingdoms. I don’t know how many people he’s bought or threatened into silence.
”
“And the crown? If you refused him, what would he do? ”
“He’d kill me,” I said simply. “Or he’d force a marriage anyway.
Either way, he wins. The only reason he’s been patient is that he needs my consent. A forced marriage would be seen as illegitimate by the human court. He needs me to say yes.
”
“He drugged you. ”
“Yes. He planned to get me alone and make me agree while I was too weak to fully understand what I was saying. Then he could claim I consented.
”
The Alpha King’s jaw tightened. “And if I helped you? What would you want from me? ”
I looked up at him, meeting those storm-colored eyes.
“Protection. Asylum. A chance to tell the human court the truth without Oberon silencing me. ”
“And in return?
”
“I don’t know,” I admitted. “I can’t offer you anything. My dowry is controlled by Oberon. The throne wouldn’t pass to you if I married you—you’d be consort, not king.
I have no gold, no lands, no armies to give you. ”
The Alpha King was silent for a long moment. Then, to my surprise, he laughed. It was a low, warm sound, completely at odds with the cold politeness he’d shown the court.
“I’m not asking for your gold, princess,” he said. “I’m asking for your trust. ”
Before I could answer, a shifter in formal livery approached, bowing low. “Your Majesty, the physician has arrived.
He’s waiting in the west sitting room. ”
The Alpha King rose, pulling me up with him. I stumbled, and he caught me, one arm around my waist. “Can you walk?
” he asked. “I think so. ”
“Good. Stay close.
”
We moved through the crowd like a current, the dancers drawing back to make way. I could feel Oberon’s gaze following us, burning into my back, but I didn’t turn around. I kept my eyes on the Alpha King’s shoulders, broad and steady, and I followed him out of the ballroom. The west sitting room was smaller and quieter than the grand hall, lit by a single fireplace and a handful of candles.
A physician was waiting, an older shifter with gray-streaked hair and kind eyes, carrying a leather satchel. “Your Majesty,” he said, bowing. “You called for me? ”
“Examine her,” the Alpha King said, guiding me to a chair by the fire.
“She’s been drugged. I want to know what was used and how much is in her system. ”
The physician worked quickly and efficiently, taking my pulse, checking my pupils, asking questions that I answered as best I could. After a few minutes, he stepped back, his expression grave.
“Nightshade,” he said. “A small dose, but enough to cause disorientation, weakness, and eventual unconsciousness. If she’d been given much more, it could have been fatal. ”
The Alpha King’s expression didn’t change, but something cold moved behind his eyes.
“Can you treat her? ”
“I can administer a counter-agent. She should feel better within the hour. But she’ll need rest.
”
“I’ll make sure she gets it,” the Alpha King said. The physician mixed a draught and handed it to me. It tasted bitter, and I gagged, but I forced it down. Almost immediately, I felt the fog in my head begin to lift.
The physician left, and the Alpha King closed the door behind him. We were alone. “Nightshade,” he repeated, leaning against the doorframe. “That’s not a common poison.
It requires training to dose correctly. ”
“Oberon is a dark mage,” I said. “He’s been practicing for years. He knows more about poisons than half the healers in the palace.
”
“You’re certain it was him? ”
“I watched him pour the powder into my glass. He thought I wasn’t paying attention, but I saw him. ”
The Alpha King crossed the room, kneeling in front of my chair.
He was close now, close enough that I could see the flecks of silver in his eyes, the faint scar that ran along his jaw. “If I help you,” he said, “I need you to understand what that means. You’ll be under my protection, but you’ll also be under my authority. There are those in my realm who will see you as an outsider, a weakness.
You’ll have enemies among my own people. ”
“I already have enemies among mine,” I said. “At least yours will be honest about it. ”
A ghost of a smile crossed his face.
“That’s the first undiplomatic thing you’ve said all night. I’ll take it as a good sign. ”
He rose, offering me his hand. I hesitated for only a moment before taking it.
“What happens now? ” I asked. “Now,” he said, “we go back to the ballroom. We let Oberon wonder what we discussed.
And when he finally corners you to demand an answer about his proposal, you’ll give him one. ”
I shook my head. “I can’t. If I refuse him outright, he’ll have no reason to hesitate.
He’ll move against me immediately. ”
“Did I say anything about refusing? ”
I stared at him. The Alpha King’s smile widened, sharp and predatory.
“I have a plan, Princess Brina. But it requires you to trust me—completely, without reservation. Can you do that? ”
I looked at him, this stranger who had appeared from nowhere, a wolf king who had no reason to help a human princess he’d never met.
I thought about Oberon, about the poison I’d already consumed, about the life I would lose if I refused. “Yes,” I said. “I trust you. ”
“Good.
” He extended his arm. “Then shall we return to the party? ”
I took his arm, and we walked back into the glittering chaos of the ballroom. The ceremony was beginning.
The Alpha King’s sister, a tall woman with copper hair and the same storm-colored eyes as her brother, stood at the altar beside Duke Ashford. The priest was speaking, and the crowd had gathered to watch. Oberon appeared at my elbow, his smile tight. “So.
”
“So,” I echoed. “Tell me, Brina. What did the Alpha King want with you? ”
“He wanted to know why I fainted,” I said lightly.
“Nonetheless, I maintained his interest. Yes, I’m here to have a chat with them all about the waltz I do with a great deal of precision. ” I turned to him, showing nothing. “He asked me to dance.
”
“You’re lying. ”
“You’re paranoid,” I returned. “He asked me to dance. I said I was feeling unwell, and he offered his physician.
That’s all. ”
Oberon’s eyes searched my face, looking for the lie. I let him look. I was getting better at hiding my truths.
“Very well,” he said at last. “But don’t think I don’t know what you’re trying to do. You think you can win protection from that shifter king. You think he’ll save you from me.
”
“I think,” I said carefully, “that you underestimate how many people in this room would love to see you fall. ”
Oberon’s hand caught my wrist, squeezing hard enough to grind bone. “Careful, princess. You’re not as clever as you think you are.
”
“And you’re not as safe as you believe,” I replied, pulling my hand free. The ceremony concluded. The new mated pair were presented, and the crowd applauded. The Alpha King stood at the head of the room, accepting congratulations with the calm authority of a ruler.
And then, to my surprise, he walked toward me. “Princess Brina,” he said, loud enough for the nearby nobles to hear. “I wonder if you would do me the honor of accompanying me on a walk through the gardens. I find myself in need of fresh air, and I would appreciate the company.
”
Oberon opened his mouth to object, but the Alpha King was already offering me his arm. I didn’t hesitate. I placed my hand on his sleeve, and we walked out of the ballroom together. The garden was cool and fragrant, lit by lanterns and a crescent moon.
We walked in silence for a moment before the Alpha King spoke. “Well done out there,” he said. “You handled him well. ”
“It won’t last,” I said.
“He’ll know soon enough that I’m not playing his game anymore. ”
“Then we’ll just have to make sure the game changes before he does. ”
We stopped beneath an arbor of white roses. The Alpha King turned to face me, his expression unreadable.
“Oberon is going to try to accelerate his plans,” he said. “He’ll move to announce your engagement tonight, before the ceremony celebrations end. If you refuse, he’ll escalate. He might try to seize you by force, or he might try to discredit you in front of the court.
”
“I told you. If I refuse him openly, he has no reason to wait. ”
“Exactly. ” He looked at me, and his eyes gleamed in the moonlight.
“That’s why you’re not going to refuse him. You’re going to tell him you’ll accept his proposal—but only after he allows you one month to properly mourn your mother. You’ll insist on a period of private reflection, a chance to honor her memory before you remarry. ”
I blinked.
“That would give us time. ”
“One month,” he agreed. “I’ll use that time to gather evidence, to find the proof we need to expose him. And if we can’t find proof, we’ll make sure he loses his grip on you regardless.
”
“You’d go to war for that? ”
The Alpha King’s smile was slow and fierce. “Princess, I’ve been looking for a reason to bring that man down since I heard about your mother. He poisoned a queen, and he’s been holding her daughter prisoner.
That’s a declaration of war against every decent ruler in both realms. ”
My heart was pounding. “What if I can’t wait a month? What if he tries something before then?
”
“Then he’ll find out that I’m not nearly as patient as I appear. ”
He looked past me, and I followed his gaze. Oberon was standing in the shadow of the palace, watching us through the garden door. The Alpha King turned back to me and raised my hand to his lips, a formal, courtly gesture that felt anything but cold.
“Trust me,” he said. “And I’ll give you back your kingdom. ”
