The American ammunition supply was something German soldiers genuinely could not understand.
American units always had more than enough ammunition, something no other army could match. They developed the habit of speculative fire, called reconnaissance by fire, firing at hedgerows, tree lines, and windows that might hold an enemy before anyone had fired from them. Vehicle columns moving through hostile country kept firing at every likely ambush position as they passed.
When Germans attacked American motor convoys, heavy machine gun fire usually broke the attack before it could do major damage. German machine gun thinking was built around rifle caliber guns like the MG 34 and MG 42, which fired very fast but could not penetrate American armor. The .
