It’s been a wild week for the Cadillac Formula 1 team. First, team principal Graeme Lowdon was suddenly shown the door, replaced by Polish motorsport veteran Marcin Budkowski. And now, whispers of a possible sale are swirling—fueled by a major federal investigation into the team’s billionaire owner.
The investigation focuses on Mark Walter, the 66-year-old founder of TWG Global, which owns Cadillac’s co-owner TWG Motorsport. Federal authorities are reportedly looking into insurance companies tied to Walter, and the timing of the probe couldn’t be more dramatic. Just last year, he bought the Los Angeles Lakers for $10 billion—then sold the iconic NBA franchise for a record $12.
5 billion, setting off alarm bells.
But it doesn’t stop there. Sources claim Walter is also in talks to sell his 13% stake in English Premier League club Chelsea to majority owner Clearlake Capital. With all this cash moving, fans and insiders alike started asking: is the Cadillac F1 team next on the block?
TWG Global is pushing back hard. A spokesperson told The Athletic, “TWG is not considering a sale of the Cadillac team or any other part of TWG Motorsports.” For now, that’s the official word, even as the team’s other racing assets—including IndyCar’s Andretti Global and NASCAR’s Spire Motorsports—remain under the same roof.
So what’s really going on behind the scenes? If the federal investigation deepens, could that change everything?
