Lewis Hamilton just got a major reason to smile as Ferrari reportedly prepares a game-changing engine upgrade that could shake up the entire F1 title race. The seven-time world champion has been fighting hard to close the gap on Mercedes, and this new development might be exactly what he needs.
Ferrari has been quietly working behind the scenes at Maranello all season, pushing to give Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc cars that can finally challenge for the championship. After Mercedes dominated the first six races, the Scuderia has slowly fought its way back into contention with steady upgrades.
The team already introduced a power unit upgrade in Austria, which reportedly gave them a modest boost of around 7 horsepower. But according to reports from Italian outlet AutoRacer, the next package is expected to be much bigger.
That second upgrade, reportedly set to debut at Ferrari’s home race in Monza, could deliver around 15 horsepower. That kind of gain is reportedly worth about two-tenths of a second per lap on a high-speed track like Monza.
Of course, more power doesn’t automatically mean victory. The car’s handling, tire wear, and how effectively that extra grunt translates to the track all matter. But coming into a circuit that rewards straight-line speed, it’s hard to see this as anything but good news for Hamilton.
Hamilton himself acknowledged the team’s efforts before the summer break, praising the factory for keeping him within striking distance of Kimi Antonelli at the top of the standings. He admitted the car has been about three or four tenths down on straight-line pace and power, but he’s confident the second half of the season will be stronger.
“We’ve been bringing upgrades weekend in, weekend out,” Hamilton said. “We’ve got a bit more to come in the second half, and we just keep on pushing.”
With Monza on the horizon and a potential power boost in the works, could this be the moment Ferrari finally turns the tide in the title fight?
