A champion swimmer once poised for college glory is now at the center of a 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 Hawaii tragedy that has left a family grieving and a community stunned.
Legend Storer, 20, has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder, first-degree burglary and indecent exposure after a brutal attack on a security guard in Maui, according to court documents.
The incident unfolded around 1:45 a.m. on August 5, when police say Storer allegedly broke into a condominium complex office in Kahana.
Inside, 63-year-old security guard Michael Dyer was on a break. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Storer striking Dyer with a five-gallon water bottle. Dyer was later found unresponsive and pronounced dead.
Storer had been a standout swimmer at Concordia University Irvine, but the school confirmed he stopped attending after the men’s swim program was discontinued in May 2025.
Hours after the alleged attack, police received reports of a naked man wandering nearby. Officers found Storer with multiple abrasions and took him to a hospital for evaluation. Investigators later matched him to the surveillance footage.
Dyer’s family described him as a devoted husband, saying in a statement, “Mike was a family man and very devoted to his wife, Joy.” They are now setting up a GoFundMe to cover unexpected expenses.
Storer’s past includes winning two Maui Interscholastic League titles while at Maui Preparatory Academy. He is now being held in Maui jail without bail, and prosecutors have labeled him an alleged “offender against the elderly” due to Dyer’s age, which could lead to a harsher sentence if convicted.
His attorney declined to comment, and family members have not responded to requests for interviews.
