Lindsay Clancy Speaks in Court for the First Time During Trial Over Her Children’s Deaths

Lindsay Clancy addressed the court for the first time during her murder trial on Tuesday, agreeing not to dispute certain facts presented in the case.

 

Clancy responded directly to Massachusetts Superior Court Judge William Sullivan on Aug. 4, confirming that she would accept a formal stipulation of facts. The brief exchange marked the first time she had spoken aloud during the proceedings.

When the judge asked whether she agreed to the stipulation, Clancy replied, “Yes, your honor.”

The agreement means Clancy will no longer challenge specific facts involving evidence in the case. Her attorney, Kevin Reddington, explained that the stipulation concerns matters including the chain of custody surrounding DNA evidence.

Because those facts are now agreed upon, prosecutors may not need to call certain witnesses whose testimony would otherwise be used to establish them. As a result, the agreement could shorten a trial that was already expected to continue for several more weeks.

Clancy Still Disputes Criminal Responsibility

Clancy is facing three murder charges in connection with the January 2023 deaths of her children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and 8-month-old Callan.

 

The children were found at the family’s home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, after prosecutors allege they were strangled with exercise bands.

Although Clancy has pleaded not guilty, her defense has acknowledged that she was responsible for the children’s deaths. Her attorneys are instead arguing that she should not be held criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and had been heavily medicated at the time.

After the killings, Clancy jumped from a second-story window and suffered a severe spinal injury that left her paralyzed from the waist down. She now attends court in a wheelchair.

Her former husband, Patrick Clancy, discovered Lindsay seriously injured outside the home before finding their children inside. He later became the first major witness to testify at the trial.

Prosecutors Continue to Present Their Case

The prosecution has called first responders and medical professionals to describe what they encountered following the deaths.

Some of the questioning has focused on Clancy’s injuries after she jumped from the window, with prosecutors appearing to challenge aspects of the defense’s account of her apparent suicide attempt.

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington has strongly rejected any suggestion that the attempt was staged.

“This is no fake suicide,” he said during his opening statement.

 

Patrick has previously testified about Lindsay’s mental health struggles before the killings. He has also publicly said that he forgave his former wife.

The trial, which began on July 27, is expected to continue as prosecutors and the defense present competing accounts of Clancy’s mental state and responsibility for the deaths of her three children.
