When a Formula 1 team hits rock bottom, most would expect chaos, finger-pointing, and a slow unraveling. But for Aston Martin, one legendary figure reportedly stepped up to keep the entire operation from falling apart.
Adrian Newey is widely known as a genius behind the drawing board, a master of aerodynamics who has shaped championship-winning cars for decades. At 67, his reputation as a technical wizard is unmatched in the sport’s history. Yet according to Aston Martin ambassador Pedro de la Rosa, there is another side to Newey that rarely makes headlines.
De la Rosa recently shared with the Express that Newey’s leadership was the glue holding the team together during a brutal start to the season. “After such a difficult start, if you don’t have someone like Adrian in the team, we wouldn’t have been able to keep as strongly united as we have,” he explained. “Having a person like him, a leader, makes the difference.”
The team, owned by Lawrence Stroll, made a bold call to sacrifice early performance in favor of a single, massive upgrade package. That gamble paid off at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where the changes reportedly knocked two seconds off their lap times. Suddenly, Aston Martin was back in the fight.
De la Rosa emphasized that this kind of decision requires real courage. “You have to be very brave in any Formula 1 team to take mid-to-long-term decisions,” he said. “That is a huge quality that Adrian has brought here, which has absolutely nothing to do with his strength behind the design process.”
With a Honda engine upgrade expected at the Dutch Grand Prix on August 23, the team is now looking ahead. But the biggest question remains: will these recent improvements be enough to convince Fernando Alonso to stay for one more season?
