Ohio Father of 4 Killed During Birthday Celebration in ‘Senseless’ Restaurant Shooting

What was supposed to be a joyful celebration turned into a nightmare when an Ohio father of four was fatally shot while enjoying a night out with his wife just days before his 40th birthday.

Robert “Rob” Russell, 39, from Chesterland, Ohio, had traveled to Put-in-Bay with his wife to celebrate the milestone birthday. The couple was spending time together during what was meant to be a special getaway when tragedy struck inside a local restaurant shortly after midnight on July 23.

According to his family, Rob was simply enjoying the evening when he got up to go to the restroom. His sister said there was no argument or confrontation before the shooting — he was just a husband and father spending time with someone he loved.

First responders rushed to the scene after reports of gunfire, but despite lifesaving efforts, Rob died from his injuries. Authorities later arrested 21-year-old Colton Smith and charged him with murder. Investigators said the two men did not appear to know each other, and a motive has not been publicly released.

Behind the headlines was a man remembered as more than a victim — a devoted husband, a father who loved his four children, and someone whose family says brought strength and kindness into the lives of those around him.

Now, instead of celebrating a 40th birthday, his loved ones are left mourning a life taken far too soon.

A family vacation.
A birthday celebration.
A moment that was supposed to create memories — not heartbreak
