Lewis Hamilton just pulled a move we rarely hear from a seven-time world champion—he said sorry. Over the team radio at the Hungarian Grand Prix, the Ferrari driver admitted he completely missed Max Verstappen charging up behind him, and the apology was as raw as it gets.
It happened on lap 16 at the Hungaroring. Verstappen, already on a mission, dove down the inside of Turn 1 and snatched fourth place from Hamilton. The Brit’s immediate reaction?
“Ah, I couldn’t see him coming, guys.” A few laps later, he doubled down with a direct apology to race engineer Carlo Santi: “Sorry about losing that position, man.”
That moment was just one slice of a chaotic 70-lap race. Lando Norris took the win, Verstappen settled for second, and Hamilton’s day spiraled from there. A virtual safety car pit stop backfired, costing him a spot to championship rival Kimi Antonelli.
Then a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane dropped him again. Final result? Fifth place.
Verstappen wasn’t exactly thrilled with Hamilton’s defensive driving either. He reportedly felt Hamilton moved under braking while trying to block the overtake. “I don’t want to complain, but that was again moving under braking,” the Red Bull star said.
“It’s nice action but it’s not right.”
Meanwhile, Hamilton’s engineer Gianpiero Lambiase had a different take on Verstappen’s pass: “That was something special.”
The real sting? Hamilton now trails championship leader Antonelli by 50 points heading into the summer break. Every position lost in Hungary only widens that gap.
