Those few words from Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence outside the hospital were enough to stir fresh concern about Princess Anne’s condition.

King Charles’ 73-year-old sister was hospitalized following an “incident” at her Gatcombe Park estate on the evening of June 23. Buckingham Palace confirmed that she had suffered minor injuries and a concussion and was being kept at Southmead Hospital in Bristol for observation.

After his wife’s third night in the hospital, Sir Timothy appeared before reporters. When asked whether Princess Anne would be discharged soon, he gave a calm but meaningful reply:

“She’ll be out when she’s ready.”

Sir Timothy had previously said Anne was doing well and recovering “slow but sure.” He expressed deep gratitude to the medical team, hospital staff, and emergency services who responded at the scene. The exact details of the accident remain unclear because Princess Anne sustained a concussion. However, her injuries were said to be consistent with a possible impact from a horse’s head or legs.

That possibility has made the incident even more unsettling, because Anne is no stranger to horses.

She is an accomplished equestrian who represented Great Britain at the 1976 Olympic Games. Yet even the most experienced rider cannot always predict the sudden movement of a powerful animal.

Reports also suggested that Anne suffered temporary memory loss connected to the incident. The accident forced her to cancel several engagements, including the state banquet at Buckingham Palace for the Japanese state visit and a planned trip to Canada.

Her absence created a noticeable void.

Anne has long been described as the “hardest-working royal,” a woman rarely known to step back from a demanding schedule. This time, however, the royal who usually moves faster than everyone else was forced to stop.

With King Charles continuing his cancer recovery and Catherine still maintaining a reduced public schedule while prioritizing her health, Anne’s hospitalization added another layer of uncertainty for the House of Windsor.

The palace said she was expected to make a full recovery.
