Now, facing her ex-husband from a wheelchair, the Massachusetts mom sobbed through opening statements in a trial that has gripped the nation.
Patrick Clancy took the witness stand Monday and described a wife who “seemed to be doing a lot better” during that January 2023 family trip to a Cape Cod water park. The photos and surveillance footage showed 5-year-old Cora smiling and playing, a happy moment that made Patrick emotional when prosecutors displayed a picture of the little girl in a “Love” T-shirt.
Lindsay Clancy is paralyzed after jumping from a second-story window in a suicide attempt that followed the deaths of Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan. She is pleading not guilty by reason of insanity, claiming she was in the grips of postpartum psychosis at the time of the stranglings.
Her defense attorney argued she desperately sought help 19 times in the months beforehand—and was prescribed 15 different psychiatric medications by five doctors, starting with Zoloft in September 2022. Patrick testified that his ex-wife “kept getting worse and worse,” even after they hired a nanny to help with the kids.
By December, she was telling her husband she was suicidal and described “thoughts of hurting the kids,” though she claimed she had no plan. She was hospitalized twice for suicidal ideation, including a brief stay at McLean Hospital that ended early so she could attend her daughter’s birthday party on Jan. 5.
Prosecutors, however, insist Clancy was “not psychotic” when she killed her children. They argue her actions were deliberate and premeditated, pointing to crime scene photos of a bloody kitchen knife and pools of blood on the bedroom floor.
