A Florida runner is recovering after he and his dog were seriously injured during an evening jog in Miami, where authorities say another man allegedly ordered two pit bulls to attack them.
The incident occurred on July 15 in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood. Police have since arrested Jonte Jack, 44, who is facing multiple criminal charges, including aggravated assault, battery, and resisting an officer. He has been charged but is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Evening Run Turned Into a Violent Encounter
According to investigators, Evan Motlong was jogging with his German Shepherd near Northwest 2nd Avenue and 22nd Street when two unleashed pit bulls suddenly charged toward his dog.
Motlong said his first instinct was to protect his pet.
“When I saw the dogs run after my dog, all I could think about was saving her,” he told local media. “That’s my baby. That’s my child.”
He said the dogs attacked his German Shepherd while he tried to pull them away and call 911.
Owner Allegedly Ordered the Dogs to Attack
According to Motlong, the situation escalated when the dogs’ owner allegedly encouraged the animals to attack him as well.
He told investigators the suspect shoved him to the ground and struck him, causing him to briefly lose consciousness while the dogs continued the attack.
Motlong suffered multiple injuries, including a severe bite wound to his arm, while his dog sustained a broken leg during the incident. Doctors are continuing to evaluate his injuries, and he said surgery may still be necessary.
Witness Video Captured the Aftermath
Video recorded by a witness reportedly shows Motlong lying on the ground bleeding as the two dogs and their owner walked away.
The footage also appears to show the suspect kicking Motlong’s cellphone before leaving the area.
The video has become a key piece of evidence as investigators continue reviewing the incident.
Arrest Made Days Later
Miami police later identified the dogs’ owner as Jonte Jack.
Authorities arrested the 44-year-old several days after the incident. He now faces charges of aggravated assault, battery, and resisting a police officer.
Police have not released additional details about the investigation, which remains ongoing.
Victim Says He Wants Justice
As he continues recovering, Motlong says his biggest concern is preventing similar incidents from happening to someone else.
He said people should be able to enjoy public spaces without worrying that they—or their pets—could suddenly be attacked.
“I just want to get justice for myself and my dog,” he said.
Investigation Continues
Authorities have not indicated whether additional charges could be filed as detectives continue reviewing witness statements, surveillance footage, and other evidence.
Meanwhile, Motlong and his dog are both recovering from their injuries, while the criminal case proceeds through the Florida court system.
