A Tennessee woman has been arrested after authorities say she attempted to hold a child underwater during a gathering at a backyard swimming pool, prompting a quick response from witnesses that may have prevented a far more serious outcome.
According to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, 31-year-old Mikaylee Rae Beirne was taken into custody on July 17 and charged with aggravated child abuse and neglect following the incident. She remains in custody as the case moves through the court system.
Witnesses Reported Child Being Held Underwater
Investigators said deputies were called to a residence after receiving reports that a woman had been holding a child underwater in a backyard pool.
According to authorities, several witnesses told investigators they saw Beirne repeatedly force the child’s head beneath the water while the child struggled to surface.
Officials said another child who witnessed the incident immediately ran inside the home to alert an adult, who rushed outside and intervened.
The adult was able to remove the child from the water before emergency responders arrived.
Child Sustained Minor Injuries
Authorities said the child suffered minor injuries and was evaluated following the incident.
