Max Verstappen could soon find himself in a high-stakes showdown with a seven-time world champion at the legendary Nurburgring Nordschleife. Reports suggest that Valentino Rossi, the iconic MotoGP legend, is on a mission to secure a racing permit for the famed track, setting the stage for an exhilarating motorsport face-off.
Rossi, affectionately known as ‘The Doctor,’ boasts an impressive tally of seven MotoGP titles and a total of nine motorcycle championships spanning from 1998 to 2021. Widely regarded as one of the greatest racers in history, Rossi has shifted gears to sportscar racing, with plans to compete in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2024 and 2025, alongside his current participation in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup, where he races a BMW M4 GT3.
According to Motorsport.com, the 47-year-old is actively pursuing the necessary permit to race at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, with aspirations of participating in a 24-hour endurance event. To qualify for this prestigious race, drivers must obtain a ‘Permit A,’ which previously required extensive testing. However, recent adjustments to the rules mean Rossi could potentially secure his permit within just one weekend of racing in the NLS series at the track.
Rossi shared his excitement about the possibility of racing at the Nurburgring during the recent 24 Hours of Spa GT3 event, stating, “Yes, because it now looks like you can get the permit done in a single weekend. We are in talks with BMW to organise everything. The Nurburgring 24 Hours is definitely on my bucket list. I hope we can make it happen with BMW.”
As Verstappen prepares for his next challenge, he has already raced at the Nurburgring Nordschleife eight times, with his most notable appearance being the 24-hour race this past May. Unfortunately, the four-time F1 world champion faced technical difficulties that derailed his chances of podium glory, finishing in 38th place, a staggering 21 laps behind the leaders. Despite this setback, Verstappen expressed his enjoyment of the event, hinting at a future return to the track.
If Rossi successfully obtains his permit in time, the 2027 Nurburgring 24 Hours could see these two motorsport titans go head-to-head, a matchup that would undoubtedly thrill fans around the world.
