They threw champagne at Elena in front of 200 guests… Then her husband said the one thing that shattered her more than the glass. She thought she was entering the Crowne family as a wife. Instead, she was being exposed as a secret they never wanted the world to see.

The champagne glass struck Elena Marlowe’s shoulder before shattering against the marble wall behind her. Golden liquid splashed across the front of her gray housekeeper’s uniform, soaking through the cheap fabric and dripping onto the polished ballroom floor. The orchestra stopped in the middle of a song, leaving behind a silence so sudden that the sound of broken glass near Elena’s shoes seemed unnaturally loud.

Nearly two hundred guests turned toward the center of the Imperial Crown Hotel’s grand ballroom. Beneath the enormous crystal chandeliers, Elena stood beside an overturned silver tray while Manhattan’s wealthiest families watched her humiliation unfold. Some guests appeared uncomfortable, while others looked entertained. Several had already raised their phones.

Across from Elena, Vanessa Crowne lowered the hand that had thrown the glass and smiled with cold satisfaction. “Clean it up,” she said. “That is what women like you are paid to do.”

Elena stared at the glittering shards near her shoes. Champagne ran down her collar, but she made no attempt to wipe it away. Instead, she slowly raised her eyes toward the man standing behind Vanessa.

Julian Crowne wore a perfectly tailored black tuxedo. He was also Elena’s husband, yet he did not defend her. He did not demand an apology or even look ashamed. He merely adjusted one of his silver cuff links and whispered, “Please don’t make this worse.”

Elena’s fingers tightened around the edge of the tray. Three weeks earlier, Julian had stood in their kitchen and begged her to trust him. He had held her face between his hands and promised that every secret surrounding the Crowne family would soon be explained.

Tonight, however, he had asked her to enter his family’s hotel through the staff entrance while wearing a servant’s uniform. He claimed his father wanted to introduce her to the family privately. Now his sister had thrown champagne at Elena in front of hundreds of guests, and Julian was asking Elena not to make things worse.

Vanessa stepped closer, the diamonds around her neck flashing beneath the chandeliers. “You heard me.”

Elena calmly placed the tray on a nearby table. “I heard you.”

“Then kneel.”

A wave of discomfort moved through the crowd. A few guests lowered their eyes, but many others raised their phones higher, eager to record what would happen next.

Julian finally stepped forward. “Vanessa, that’s enough.”

Vanessa spun toward him. “Enough? Your secret wife entered our hotel through the staff door. She has been pretending to belong to this family for two years. Tonight, she can finally show everyone where she truly belongs.”

Elena turned toward Julian. “Secret wife?”

The color drained from his face.

Vanessa’s smile widened. “Oh, he never told you?”
