Buster Murdaugh is speaking out for the first time regarding the persistent allegations surrounding the death of his former classmate, Stephen Smith. In a recent interview, he firmly denied any involvement in the tragic case that has captivated public attention since 2015.
In an exclusive conversation with Martha McCallum for the Fox Nation documentary “The Fall of the House of Murdoch,” Buster addressed the rumors that have circulated about him. “I never had anything to do with his murder, and I never had anything to do with him on a physical level,” he stated emphatically, dismissing claims that have linked him to Smith’s death.
The controversy reignited after Smith’s mother initiated efforts to exhume her son’s body for a second autopsy, following a series of podcasts and documentaries that suggested Buster might be a suspect. Stephen Smith, an openly gay teenager, was found dead in a road in Hampton County in July 2015, with his car discovered a few miles away. Initial investigations classified his death as a hit-and-run, but the circumstances remained unclear.
Throughout the investigation, the Murdaugh name surfaced multiple times, stirring speculation and gossip in the tight-knit community. Buster’s sister and brother reportedly received claims suggesting a romantic connection between him and Smith, along with allegations of a violent encounter involving a group of young men. In response, Buster firmly rejected these assertions, calling them “absolutely baseless” and “defamatory.”

When asked about his whereabouts on the night of Smith’s death, Buster recounted being at the family beach house with his mother and brother, who are both deceased. His father, Alec Murdaugh, is currently serving two life sentences for the murders of Buster’s mother and brother but is appealing the verdict.
Reflecting on the impact of these allegations, Buster expressed the emotional toll it has taken on him. “It’s a terrible thing to place on somebody with absolutely no fact,” he remarked, highlighting how these claims have tarnished his reputation.
As investigations continue, including a state grand jury looking into Smith’s death, the results of the recent autopsy remain undisclosed. With the documentary set to premiere on August 31, viewers are left wondering how this saga will unfold and what new revelations may come to light.
