Kurt Russell is sharing why he thinks Taylor Sheridan’s projects resonate.

In an interview with Deadline published on Tuesday, June 16, Russell said at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival that the Yellowstone creator’s shows connect with “the silent majority.”

Russell, 75, stars in Paramount+’s The Madison, the latest series from the man also behind Landman and Lioness. “You keep finding yourself saying, ‘I know that moment,’ or ‘I know those people,’” The Madison star told the outlet of what he sees as a relatability in the work.

On Tuesday, the actor received the Crystal Nymph Award at the festival, honoring his career achievements and impact in the entertainment industry. The award comes as Russell returned to television to star as Preston Clyburn in Sheridan’s drama, as well as in the Godzilla series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV.

“It’s really an adult-themed show, because you can’t really appreciate [the story] until you have something like that happen to you at a certain time in your life,” Russell added of The Madison. “I’ve never done anything like The Madison in terms of how it hits people.”

The series follows the Clyburn family as they move from New York City to the Madison River valley of central Montana after an unimaginable tragedy. The Madison explores the transformation of the family after the deaths of its patriarch, Preston, and his brother Paul, played by Matthew Fox.

Alongside Russell and Fox, the drama stars Michelle Pfeiffer as Stacy Clyburn. “Very few people have the opportunity to have a wonderful 40-year marriage but where you had no idea how wonderful it was, like Michelle’s character,” Russell said of the plot. “How do you show that? How do you talk about that? She’s so wrought with not just guilt, but angst and anger at herself for getting all of him.”

Speaking with Men’s Health in March, Russell echoed a similar sentiment, sharing that his costar’s character is “realizing how much more they could have had that they didn’t have because of something she didn’t do.”

“As you get older and you’ve only got so much time left, that doubles things up in terms of looking at what you’ve done in your life so far and what you want to do with the rest of your life,” he said.

Elsewhere, Russell explained that playing Pfeiffer’s husband in the show made him think about his real-life relationship with longtime partner Goldie Hawn.

“Some of the conversations that [Preston and Stacy] have, I’ve had,” he said. “Goldie and I have had very similar conversations. Their relationship, it’s the kind of relationship you almost never see anymore. It’s a truly loving relationship. It’s not like there’s another shoe to drop. That’s what makes it so difficult for [Michelle’s] character when she loses her husband.”

Before The Madison debuted, Russell gave an update on its forthcoming second season, telling Entertainment Weekly that Pfeiffer and Taylor were “able to get together with the people at Paramount+ and said, ‘Well, let’s do two seasons instead of just one'” to make filming work for him.

Speaking with The Wrap in March, Pfeiffer said the forthcoming second season has “a surprising amount of laughs and comical relief.” The show is already also renewed for a season 3.

The Madison is streaming on Paramount+.
