Luigi Mangione’s upcoming state murder trial is taking a new direction as his attorneys prepare to present a psychiatric defense related to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
During a court hearing in New York, Judge Gregory Carro revealed that Mangione’s lawyers plan to argue that he was experiencing an “extreme emotional disturbance” at the time of the shooting. The defense strategy does not claim he was not involved, but instead argues that his mental state should be considered when determining criminal responsibility.
If accepted by a jury, the defense could potentially reduce the charge from murder to manslaughter, which would carry a lower possible sentence. Prosecutors, however, are expected to challenge the argument and focus on evidence they say shows planning and intent behind the attack.
