In a haunting twist of fate, Mackenzie Shirilla, now 21, had accused her late boyfriend, Dominic Russo, of attempting to harm her just weeks before a tragic car crash took both their lives. The chilling details emerged from recently released text messages that reveal a turbulent relationship marked by emotional turmoil.
According to reports, Shirilla’s messages to Russo, who was 20 at the time of the accident, depict a heated exchange over her reckless driving. “Do you think I would have my car started with you in it knowing that you just tried to 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁 me?” she reportedly texted, demanding to know why he loved her. This alarming conversation foreshadowed the deadly incident that would unfold in July 2022.
The texts also included alarming threats of self-harm and violence. “I’m gonna 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁 someone,” she wrote, expressing deep emotional distress. Prosecutors later described her actions as deliberate when she drove her Toyota Camry at 100 mph into a brick wall, resulting in the deaths of Russo and his friend, 19-year-old Davion Flanagan.

Shirilla was found unconscious at the scene, her feet still on the accelerator, while both Russo and Flanagan were pronounced dead at the site of the crash. The court described her as “literal hell on wheels” during sentencing, where she received two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life for the fatalities.

In the weeks leading up to the accident, Russo had reportedly attempted to end their relationship, expressing his love but also his concerns. “Kenzie, you know I love you, but I don’t think we should be together at this point,” he texted, suggesting they find happiness elsewhere due to the escalating tensions.

Following the crash, Shirilla was hospitalized and displayed signs of grief and guilt, according to court documents. Despite this, she later reached out to Russo’s family, claiming she had no memory of the events leading up to the fatal wreck and even promised to undergo hypnosis to recover those lost memories.
The tragic story has captivated audiences and is now the focus of a Netflix documentary titled “The Crash.” As Shirilla continues to appeal her conviction, many are left wondering about the complexities of her relationship with Russo and the events that led to that fateful day. What truly happened in those final moments?
