The future of the beloved Independence Day franchise hangs in the balance as fans eagerly await news of a potential third installment. Nearly ten years after the last alien invasion, the fate of Independence Day 3 remains uncertain, leaving audiences wondering if they will ever witness another epic battle for Earth.
Director Roland Emmerich, who brought the original 1996 film to life—grossing an impressive $817.4 million worldwide—has been candid about his regrets surrounding the sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence. The 2016 film, which faced a harsh critical reception with a mere 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, struggled to recoup its $165 million budget, earning only $389.7 million globally. Emmerich has openly admitted that the absence of Will Smith, who famously turned down the role to star in Suicide Squad, significantly impacted the film’s quality. He shared with Business Insider that without Smith’s character, Captain Steven Hiller, the sequel fell short of his original vision.
Plans for back-to-back sequels, initially titled ID Forever Part 1 and ID Forever Part 2, were scrapped following the disappointing performance of Resurgence. Producer Dean Devlin expressed at WonderCon in 2018 that he had no intentions of pursuing another sequel. However, Emmerich has not completely shut the door on the franchise. During San Diego Comic-Con 2024, he hinted that the project might still have life, revealing that a third film could explore an intergalactic journey set one or two years after Resurgence. This sequel would continue to feature a younger generation of characters, including Dylan Dubrow Hiller, portrayed by Jessie T. Usher.

The 2019 Disney-Fox merger added another layer of complexity to the franchise’s future. Initially, Emmerich feared that Disney’s acquisition might spell the end for Independence Day. Yet, he later recognized that the studio’s focus on franchise potential could breathe new life into the series. Emmerich’s vision of humanity taking the fight to the aliens’ home planet is undeniably exciting. However, without the star power of Will Smith or a fresh creative direction, the third installment risks becoming just another example of Hollywood’s sequel fatigue.
As fans hold their breath for a potential revival, one question looms large: will Disney ultimately decide to bring Independence Day 3 to life, or will the franchise remain a nostalgic memory?
