Alexander Volkanovski is on the edge of his seat, eagerly anticipating news about his next title defense. The reigning UFC featherweight champion, who recently secured a victory over Diego Lopes at UFC 325 in February, is ready to step back into the octagon after a quieter couple of years.
In a candid chat with MMA Junkie, Volkanovski shared his hopes for a swift return to action. “I want something announced, or at least locked in,” he expressed, acknowledging the complexities of scheduling in the UFC. With major events on the horizon, including Conor McGregor’s highly anticipated fight in July, Volkanovski understands that the matchmakers have their hands full. “I’m aiming for August or September,” he added, hinting at dates that have been circulating among fans and analysts.
This weekend, UFC White House promises to be a showstopper, featuring a lightweight title unification bout between champion Ilia Topuria and interim champion Justin Gaethje. Following that, UFC 329 on July 11 will see Max Holloway face off against McGregor, while UFC 330 in Philadelphia on August 15 remains without a main event.
As for Volkanovski, he has his sights set on the undefeated Movsar Evloev, the current No. 1 contender. Despite facing some injury setbacks, Evloev boasts an impressive 10-0 record in the UFC, with notable wins over fighters like Aljamain Sterling and Arnold Allen. Volkanovski believes Evloev is the rightful challenger for his title. “Movsar is the most deserving contender,” he stated. “I want to fight the best, and he’s been waiting for this opportunity.”
With the unpredictable nature of the sport, Volkanovski is prepared for any surprises that might come his way. “You’ve always got to be ready for a curveball,” he noted, emphasizing the excitement and unpredictability that fans love about MMA.
As the countdown to his next fight continues, fans are left wondering: will Volkanovski’s next bout be against Evloev, or will the UFC throw a surprise twist into the mix?
