In a shocking case that has captivated the nation, a Virginia man was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for orchestrating the murders of his wife and an unsuspecting man. Brendan Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer, was found guilty of a calculated scheme involving his affair with the family’s Brazilian au pair.
On February 24, 2023, Banfield claimed he shot Joseph Ryan in self-defense, alleging he found Ryan attacking his wife, Christine Banfield, a dedicated pediatric intensive care nurse. However, prosecutors painted a different picture, asserting that Banfield and au pair Juliana Peres Magalhães conspired to eliminate Christine, luring Ryan to their home as part of their deadly plan.
Judge Penney Azcarate did not hold back during the sentencing, describing Banfield’s actions as deeply troubling and devoid of any regard for human life. “The disregard of the life of your wife, someone you supposedly loved, is almost unfathomable,” she stated, emphasizing the impact on the couple’s young daughter, who was present during the horrific events.
In addition to the murder charges, Banfield was also convicted of child endangerment, as their 4-year-old daughter was in the home when the crimes occurred. The judge added five years to his sentence for that charge, along with three additional years for a firearms offense.
Throughout the proceedings, Banfield maintained his innocence, asserting that it was implausible for him to have committed the murders. He suggested that there was dissent within the police department regarding the theory that he and Magalhães had impersonated Christine on a fetish website to lure Ryan.
Magalhães, who began working for the Banfields in 2021, testified that Banfield had expressed a desire to marry her and have children, but felt he needed to “get rid of” his wife first. She revealed that they had used the fetish website to set up a meeting with Ryan, which turned deadly. On the day of the murders, she waited outside with the couple’s child while Banfield shot Ryan and subsequently attacked Christine.
Dubbed the “au pair affair” by some media outlets, this tragic case took another turn when Magalhães pleaded guilty to manslaughter in exchange for her testimony against Banfield. She received a 10-year prison sentence following the trial.
At her sentencing, Judge Azcarate expressed her dismay at Magalhães’ actions, stating that they demonstrated a profound disregard for life. “You do not deserve anything other than incarceration and a life of reflection on what you have done to the victim in this family,” she remarked, leaving a haunting question hanging in the air about the future of the Banfields’ daughter.
As this unsettling story unfolds, many are left wondering how such a betrayal could happen within a family.
