Paramount Pictures officially announced a new World War Z film at CinemaCon in April 2026, reviving the franchise twelve years after the original became the highest-grossing zombie movie in history with $540 million worldwide. While the studio has confirmed the project is in active development, no director, writer, or release date has been formally attached, and industry speculation points toward a 2027 premiere as the most realistic window under the newly merged Paramount Skydance banner.
Brad Pitt remains involved as a producer through his Plan B Entertainment, and Mireille Enos, who portrayed his wife Karin in the 2013 original, has confirmed that previous sequel drafts included her character. Enos expressed enthusiasm about returning, stating she thinks a reunion with Pitt would be incredible, though she clarified she has no official information about the new film’s plans at this time. The project has a long and troubled development history; David Fincher was attached to direct a 2019 sequel that was canceled before filming, and J.A. Bayona was previously linked to an earlier version in 2015 before departing due to scheduling conflicts. David Ellison, now overseeing the franchise under Paramount Skydance, has named World War Z among the studio’s key priorities alongside Top Gun 3 and Star Trek, with the renewed interest partly fueled by Pitt’s recent box office success with F1, which surpassed the zombie film to become his highest-grossing release at $575 million worldwide.
